BMW to Increase its EV Spending Budget
September 03 2023,
BMW has announced that it is increasing its spending towards the manufacture of electric cars after a boost in sales in the first half of the year. Chief Financial Officer Walter Mertl recently said the company would invest more than planned after development spending rose by nearly 20 percent to $2.6 billion in the second quarter of 2023.
The i4 sedan and the iX3 SUV topped the list of battery-powered vehicles that made up about 13 percent of all group deliveries in the first half of the year. By next year, the company predicts this to rise dramatically. Moreover, its car sales forecast expects solid gains for the remainder of this year after adding the 5-Series sedan and an i5 electric companion.
Despite the high expectations, BMW was concerned about the increased cost of production, which can limit cash flow leading to logistics constraints. The increased inventories mean the company will spend more to meet customers’ demands. New logistics issues have also arisen after the shortage of semiconductors was eased, leading to more vehicle production.
Volkswagen, Taycan and Porsche have faced the same problem with finished cars stranded in factories. Undeterred by these complications, BMW group earnings before tax and interest rose by 28 percent to $6.25 billion. Overall, the automotive industry saw a return rise to 9.2 percent.
